Pez candy was first invented in 1927 in Vienna, Austria. Original PEZ dispensers, known as regulars, were similar to cigarette lighters and the candies were all mint flavored. The name PEZ comes from the German word for peppermint, Pfefferminz. PEZ was primarily marketed to adults as an alternative to smoking. Fast forward to 1952 and PEZ was introduced to the United States. In 1955, character heads were added to the dispensers and the candy bricks were fruit flavored, now appealing to children. Santa Claus and Mickey Mouse were two of the first characters introduced. Since then, more than 550 unique dispensers have been created with thousands of variations. Numerous limited edition, boxed sets have been introduced including The Wizard of Oz, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, The Lord of the Rings, Star Trek and Mickey Mouse. Star Wars dispensers remain among the most popular since their introduction in the 1990ís. Candy Crate offers a full array of PEZ dispensers and PEZ candy refills as well as some hard to find collectible PEZ gift sets.
